ACC targets five ministries

By Mohamed Vandi in Kenema

The anti-corruption commission yesterday conducted managerial accountability workshop for senior executives in the ministries of education, health, local government, agriculture and energy and power.

Addressing participants at the district council hall in Kenema, acting officer-in-charge of ACC in Bo Patrick Sandy said his commission was going through a restructuring process wherein departments would focus on their activities to ensure better and robust approach to the fight against corruption.

He said since its establishment in 2000, the Commission has organized several workshops for various institutions in order to educate them on the ways of eliminating corruption in the ministries of education, agriculture, health, local government, energy and power.

“The challenges of meeting the millennium development goals by 2015 is contingent on the level of transparency and accountability that should characterise these ministries,” he said, adding that participants at the workshop were expected to put their best towards developing an action plan that would guide managers in ensuring social accountability in their respective sections.

“His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma's stance is zero tolerance on corruption.  This makes it imperative on every Sierra Leonean to contribute to the fight and make Sierra Leone a corrupt free society,” he said.

In his presentation on managerial accountability ACC prevention officer Mathew Roberts said corruption mostly occurs in institutions where people in key positions fail to inspire, influence high moral standard, set bad examples, like supervisory capability, livelihood of being caught in low and punishment is lenient.
