Regional director with the ministry of lands, housing and the environment in Kenema Wednesday confirmed the community graveyard in Tombombu section has been exhausted and that it does not have enough land to accommodate more interments.
Alphonso Pratt said the cemetery has lost its effectiveness for a very long time now.
“I have not been officially told by the community people about plans to relocate the cemetery but unconfirmed source intimated me that somewhere within the community has been identified for the relocation of the cemetery,” he said.
Pratt said he had already told some of the authorities concerned that they need to inform the ministry so that the land can be assessed to know whether it was conducive for the purpose.
He said there was massive encroachment of the cemetery by squatters around the location and noted that with the exception of one house erected by the entrance of the cemetery all other structures around the location were illegal.
