Inferno destroys 26 houses

A violent firestorm broke out in Kanga, formerly Kanga Oil Mill in the Bum chiefdom, Bonthe district leaving some 26 houses completely burnt down and over 300 people homeless.

Almost three weeks after what victims perceived was a case of arson, police could not come out with any statement on the circumstances that might have led to the blaze.

However, while no death was reported, property consumed up in flames were estimated at millions of leones . They include seed rice, palm oil, palm fruits, cassava tubers, gari and other cash crops like cocoa and coffee.

Chief Benjamin Gbongon told concord times that the fire accident started at about 3:30pm when all the young men in the town had gone to the bush to brush and clear their farmlands.

“We were all out of the town. We left behind the aged and children who tried their best to put out the fire but to no avail. Before we knew it, the fire had spread to almost the entire village, leaving only few houses,” he said.

Chief Gbongon said the over 300 victims most of them women and children now sleep in the open at the mercy of cold, mosquitoes, snakes and wild animals.

He appealed to the government, humanitarian organizations, aid agencies and other non-governmental organizations to come to their aid and to help them rebuild their tattered lives again.
