Salone boxers lack techniques

Despite winning the Zone II championship, Sierra Leone-born boxing coach took a swipe on Sierra Leonean boxers saying they lack the necessary techniques to compete favourably with their counterparts elsewhere.

Coach Daniel Samura who is the assistant coach of Guinea national boxing team blamed officials running the sport for the boxers' ineptitude.

Samura also expressed his grievance at the Sierra Leone Boxing Association (SLBA) as he claimed that their behavior towards him was unpleasant.

He said, “During my stay in Freetown , the so called heads of the association pushed us back and did a lot of bad things which are not good to be said.”

“Only the military team encouraged me and I was in charge of the team that went to Guinea which performed well,” Samura noted.

He alleged that executive members of the association are sidelining brains like Limpre Sesay who he described as the brain behind the success of boxing in Sierra Leone .

“I am not in Guinea wholeheartedly; I should have been the national coach but the people are racist. I have nothing to do because my home country is forsaking me,” the former national boxer said.

On the performance of the Guineans at the tournament, Samura said despite the introduction of six new boxers with little or no experience in international boxing, they performed well.

In response to Samura, Secretary General of SLBA Christian Campbell said: “Indeed Samura is right to express his disappointment but some of his statements are not correct.”
